The Emerge in the North Art Exhibition is a continuing partnership of Multicultural Arts Victoria and the Brotherhood of St Laurence, welcoming new supporters, the City of Hume, in 2019.
The 2019 exhibition develops the past two years’ programs to bring a new career opportunity to the many exceptional visual artists from new, emerging, Indigenous and refugee communities who live, work or study in Melbourne’s outer northern suburbs. Artists shortlisted will have the opportunity to create new work to exhibit at the gallery space in the Hume Global Learning Centre in a professional setting.

Short biography about yourself and your artistic practice
Sample of 5-8 recent artworks
Artists must be living, working or studying in the outer northern suburbs of Melbourne; and identify as part of a new, emerging, Indigenous or refugee community.
All artforms are invited.
Application deadline extended: 11.59 PM, Friday, 3 May 2019
SELECTION PROCESS2 weeks after the closing date, 5 applicants will be shortlisted to be included in a group exhibition curated by Santy Saptari at Broadmeadows Global Learning Centre from 29 Aug – 8 Oct 2019.
The 5 applicants are expected to create a new body of works in discussion with the curator. Each artist will receive a materials budget to create the body of work, provided by Multicultural Arts Victoria. Each artist will be given one-on-one sessions with the curator in preparation for the exhibition.
These sessions are provided to support artists in developing ideas for the exhibition, discussing challenges and issues related to the exhibition.
PRIZEThe Best in Show, judged by a panel of three highly regarded practising artists and art professionals will have a curated exhibition at Gee Lee-Wik Doleen Gallery, Craigieburn for 2 months in December 2019-January 2020.
JUDGES
Tobias Hengeveld is a practicing musician and artist. He has been Curator at Hume’s principal exhibition space Gee Lee-Wik Doleen Gallery for the past 7 years, during which time he has developed a strong knowledge of Arts and Cultural practice in the region and connection to Hume’s diverse community.
Bushra Hasan is a practising artist, graphic designer, creator of a Melbourne Art Tram in 2017 and the founder of Indybindi Designs. Bushra has exhibited globally and was part of Emerge in the North Art Exhibition in 2018.
Kay Abude is an artist living and working in Melbourne whose creative practice engages many different forms of making. Kay is a graduate of the Victorian College of the Arts, The University of Melbourne and has received numerous awards and grants. She is currently a Gertrude Studio Artist at Gertrude Contemporary, Melbourne.
